Do not use Install discs from others versions of Mac OS X. While generally rare, bad sectors can develop on a hard drive at any time. While Disk Utility or third-party disk utilities can usually correct directory corruption, they cannot repair corrupted files. This practice should significantly minimize the potential for data loss to new data or changes to existing data since the last backup was performed.
